Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) means the completion of training hours and assessment of skills and knowledge that an individual has achieved prior to entering our current accredited program. RPL assesses this previous learning against the requirements of the IECL existing qualifications, in respect of both entry requirements and program outcomes.
Commonly, the request is to begin our programs at the second (PCC) level of coach education, on the basis of existing qualifications or coaching experience, or to join continuing education programs without prior IECL coach education.
For the ICF Level 2 or PCC pathway, we recommend all students - however qualified they are - begin at Level 1 to gain the basic language and frameworks that IECL uses. This is because, in our experience:
-
Our course participants are already highly experienced (and sometimes highly trained) coaches, trained (or not) in different frameworks, tools, and skills to those of the IECL (although sometimes there are overlaps). However, our particular form of training and facilitation provides a different experience and adds significantly to people’s practice effectiveness,
-
A large part of IECL's value lies in the community of practice connected to coach education. Without a common frame of reference, including language and frameworks, participation in this community is limited, and so is the value IECL offers to coaches.
However, if a student wishes to be assessed for RPL, we offer the option of our IECL RPL process which is as follows. This option is necessary because we have an externally accredited program via the International Coaching Federation.
For continuous coach education (CPD programs) it is important that your foundational coaching skills are strong, hence our recommendation to apply for RPL as the first step is to submit a recording of your coaching, so we can benchmark your skills against our curriculum.
Note: If you are coaching but have not completed an ICF Accredited Level 1 program at another coach education provider, this RPL policy is for you.
Application for RPL
- Commence the online application by submitting an application review fee. You have the option to make payment in your preferred currency (click on the links below):
- Following payment, you will be provided a link to continue the online application. You are required to provide documentation of your coach training education, including:
- The organisation name and contact information
- The number of coach specific education training hours completed
- The completion certificate
You are also required to provide an example of one of your recent organisational coaching sessions, either conducted in person or virtually. Please upload:
- A recording of 30-45 minutes
- A transcript of the session
- Your client’s permission to share this coaching session, by checking the box in the application form
The recording will be reviewed by an IECL accredited PCC Marker trained coach, who will be benchmarking demonstrated application of the ICF core competencies in your coaching. You will receive valuable feedback on your coaching from an IECL faculty member, which will be useful in your development as a coach, independent of your next steps.
If you are successful at this stage, you may be asked to complete the following three tasks.
- Written submission (2000 words), which demonstrates:
- Evidence via case conceptualisation of your knowledge of each of the ICF core competencies,
- Summary of the core coaching frameworks or models utilised in organisational coaching engagements,
- Knowledge of how organisational coaching differs from consulting, mentoring, and counselling in organisations,
- An example of an ethical dilemma you have encountered in organisational coaching and how you dealt with this.
-
Provide an attestation of logged coaching hours including the total number of hours over which duration and with how many counterparts.
-
Describe your commitment to ongoing professional development and/or supervision over the last 12 months.
